The NYC Food Protection
Certificate, explained

The Health Code requires supervisors of food service establishments to be certified in food protection. Here is how the City says to get the certificate.

Who needs it

According to the Health Department's course FAQ, the NYC Health Code requires that supervisors of food service establishments and non-retail food service establishments be certified in food protection. Completing the course and passing the final exam satisfies that requirement. The course is open to the public.

How the course works

The exam and the cost

Taking the course is free, but to receive the certificate you must pass a final in-class exam. The Health Department lists the exam cost as $24 plus a $0.60 convenience fee, payable by credit card. The exam is held at the NYC Health Academy, 160 West 100th Street, 2nd floor, New York, NY 10025; bring photo identification and a printout of your confirmation page. The Department says the certificate should arrive within 2 to 6 weeks after the exam.

Does it expire?

The Health Department states the certificate never expires and there is no need to repeat the course, although under special circumstances the Department may require individuals to retake it.

Beyond the certificate

The certificate covers the supervisor. Day-to-day inspection results depend on the whole team, so many operators pair it with regular in-house refreshers. If you want a training plan built around your menu and kitchen, get in touch.
